Deserving of its BAFTA and Oscar awards, but most impressively should have been screened in IMAX, as it was in at the Waterloo in London. This film encapsulates the drama if making a historic 4 hour rooe-free ascent uo El Capitan, Yosemite, California, but left out much of the months and years of meticulous planning by Honnold and the film-makers. The story arc of love and passion is well told, and fortunately through the deft hands of Chai, a student of Mike Nichols. Chin and his crew does impressive cinematographic work and the real praise must go to the editing, too. The central hero cannot be ignored, and this is an ode to his singular joy of skin, rubber and chalk in friction against wind, rock, and the discipline it entails to complete the course. Inspiring and does proper homage to the sport of climbing, in reality and as metaphor.
Breathtaking photography. The climbing footage is riveting. The climb itself is incredibly intense. Almost breathless watching Alex Honnold climb mountains alone and without ropes.
