Earlier this week, the internet was abuzz with excitement as we got our first proper look at the return of Ben Affleck's autistic hitman Christian Wolff in The Accountant 2. And now, having had our appetite for more digit-based danger whetted by the sight of Affleck and on-screen brother Jon Bernthal being reunited in Gavin O'Connor's long-gestating sequel, today Amazon and Warner Bros. dropped the real payload — the first full trailer for the upcoming financial thriller. We've run the numbers and we think it adds up to an inbound banger from O'Connor and writer Bill Dubuque,
Now that's a trailer! Christian Wolff is back and neurospicy as ever; J.K. Simmons' U.S. Treasury investigator Ray gets whacked and leaves a message on his arm reading 'Find the accountant'; and Christian and his mercenary brother Brax — with Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) shaped mediator — are off on a road trip to heal the ties that bind... and blaze a bloody trail, naturally. It's like Rain Man if Dustin Hoffman was a killer and Tom Cruise was a killer and they were both in deep trouble with wrong'uns who were also killers. So not a hell of a lot like Rain Man then after all actually, save for, y'know, the whole "autistic genius and his self-absorbed brother go on a road trip" thing. But still, it looks like a slick thriller with a sequel worthily upped ante, Affleck and Bernthal remain as dynamite a pairing as you'd hope, and Christian Wolff continues to be the gift that keeps on giving as he mixes moments of pure badassery with the same idiosyncratic dryness of tone and delivery that made the first film such a smash after hitting streaming services.
And here's the official synopsis for the film: "When her former boss is killed by unknown assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson) is forced to contact Christian Wolff (Affleck) to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Bernthal), Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive — all intent on putting a stop to their search."
We'll see whether The Accountant 2 (aka The Accoun2nt) does numbers at the box office — or if it leaves us feeling sad like quadratic formulae — when Gavin O'Connor's hotly anticipated sequel hits cinemas on 25 April.
