There’s plenty going on in the trailer for Paul WS Anderson’s latest film. The director – behind Event Horizon and many video game adaptations, from Resident Evil to Monster Hunter – is back with his first outing in five years, In The Lost Lands. It does, of course, star his regular lead (and wife) Milla Jovovich, this time alongside Dave Bautista. And it’s based on a George RR Martin short story, combining fantasy and sci-fi and horror elements. But more than anything, it looks like a total genre mash-up, with plenty of influences in the mix. 

First impressions indicate that this one is something of a Mad Max with all that post-apocalyptic flavour. Plus, there's more than a splash of Zack Snyder stylings; a real dose of Western tropes; a dash of running-corpse horror; and high-fantasy with all that witchy business. The film is being described as “a breathtaking thrill ride through a visually hellish landscape” with a script that comes from Anderson himself, co-writing alongside Constantin Werner. Here’s the official synopsis: “In The Lost Lands centres on a queen who sends the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of a magical power, where the sorceress and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Dave Bautista) must outwit and outfight man and demon.”

Will In The Lost Lands manage to synthesise all those elements? We’ll find out when it hits UK cinemas on 14 March.
