Excellent. But not as great as I expected.
When the movie ended, i only had 1 phrase in my mind: That's it? Violet evergarden the TV series has been constantly getting a full 5 star from me. Mostly because it manages to pack Clannad levels of emotional puch in 30min episode runtimes, which is why I couldn't help myself but to compare the movie with the TV series. The movie by itself is animated amazingly, as expected by Kyoani. The VA was done beautifully too. And the story is better than most movies I've watched. However, wheni compare it with the TV series, with incomprehensibly well made episodes like episode 10. The movie feels lacking, even with it's longer runtime. Even so, I did not walk out the cinema disappointed. It was definitely worth the watch. The perfectly executed visuals and VO was by itself already worth the 17 dollars. Not to mention the beautifully composed BG music by Evan Call. The only thing that the movie missed was the emotional punch I was expecting. The pacing, characters and storytelling is still top notch, and remains will still go into my top 5 for my favorite anime movies. Keep it up Kyoani!
The art, animation in this movie is top notch. What is great about this movie is the detail of each scene. It’s an emotional moment to think that 35 lives of talented animators were lost from the arson attack at Kyoto Animation. May they rest in peace.
