Babygirl Becomes One Of A24's Highest Grossing Movies After Just Two Weekends

Babygirl has become an all-time hit for A24. The independent studio and distributor's newest movie is an erotic thriller written and directed by Bodies Bodies Bodies' Halina Reijn that follows a CEO (Nicole Kidman) beginning an illicit affair with an intern (Harris Dickinson) while exploring her identity and her sexual proclivities. The Babygirl release kicked off on Christmas Day 2024, debuting at the No. 7 spot on the domestic chart, a position that made it the third-best of the holiday frame's new releases, which also included Nosferatu (No. 3), A Complete Unknown (No. 6), and The Fire Inside (No. 10).

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Babygirl is projected to take in a 3-day gross of $4.6 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters. This will bring its cumulative domestic total to $16.2 million, drawing closer to its reported $20 million budget. This also sees it surpass MaXXXine's domestic box office total of $15.1 million to make it No. 19 on The Numbers' chart of the highest-grossing A24 domestic releases of all time.

While Babygirl has already acquired a prominent position the chart, the Nicole Kidman age gap movie could continue to climb. If it has a similar performance in its third weekend, taking in roughly $4 million, it will rise to become their No. 16 highest-performing movie. While it may never reach the heights of the $77.2 million gross of their No. 1 title, the 2022 Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once, it is a strong contender in the overall Top 20.

It is also possible that the Nicole Kidman movie will exceed expectations and continue to grow throughout the month. Already, its week-on-week growth during its second weekend saw it rise 3% overall, which is a somewhat common domestic box office phenomenon during the period between Christmas and the end of January, as a dearth of new releases coincides with time off for many schools and businesses around North America. Babygirl reviews, which have earned the movie a Certified Fresh 77% Rotten Tomatoes score, could also be helping drive interest toward the movie.

Although the movie is showing strong theatrical potential, it still remains to be seen if it can break even in theaters. Most likely because the Babygirl cast includes major stars such as Nicole Kidman and Antonio Banderas, its budget is $20 million, which likely means that its break-even point is $50 million or more, a milestone that it may never reach at this pace. However, it could make up for its potential commercial disappointment with its performance during awards season, in which it has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and shortlisted for an Oscar nomination.
