Synopsis

This compilation of five short stories explores women`s reproductive choices across different cultures and time periods. We follow Zi Lin in China who relinquishes a second child due to family pressure; Yao Hong, a Shanghai courtesan who terminates a pregnancy during wartime with help from her rescued companion Su Qing; Vietnamese immigrants A-Li and A-Mai fleeing police while in labor to protect their unborn child; Ann in Norway whose unexpected pregnancy forces her to confront relationship issues with her girlfriend and mother; and Mari, a migrant worker in Singapore who attempts a self-abortion to avoid deportation. Through these diverse narratives spanning different backgrounds and circumstances, the compilation examines the complex intersection of motherhood, choice, societal pressure, and survival that women navigate across various cultural contexts.
