On the surface, it seems there’s quite a bit of connective tissue between Celine Song’s acclaimed hit Past Lives, and her upcoming A24 romcom Materialists. They’re both films set in New York, in which a woman is torn between two paths represented by two men. But Materialists looks like a shift of gear for the filmmaker, away from the tender yearning of her almost painfully wistful debut, and into broader, starrier territory. Case in point: the lead in Materialists is Dakota Johnson, playing a matchmaker to wealthy clientele who finds herself split between Pedro Pascal’s moneyed slickster, and Chris Evans’ tousle-haired waiter. It truly is a tough life for some, isn’t it?
Those who have cried out for a slick, classy, grown-up romcom, Materialists might be just what you’ve waited for. Narratively, there’s even a bit of mainstream romcom fare like Hitch here (can the romance professional work out their own romantic entanglements?), but the packaging is very A24 – and given that Song has penned the script as well as directing indicates that we could be in for some knotty emotional underpinnings. Plus, seeing beautiful people work out emotional angst in beautiful places is always alluring. All of those boxes seem to be ticked here. If this looks like a different beast to Past Lives, many of Song’s collaborators have joined her on this one – including cinematographer Shabier Kirchner, and editor Keith Fraase.
US audiences will get to see Materialists when it hits cinemas on 13 June. In the UK, Sony Pictures will be distributing the film, though an official date is yet TBC. Here’s hoping we get a slice of the wedding cake before the edges go crusty.
