As the year draws to a close, it’s time to bid farewell to 2017 the only way we know how… with a list of new movies to get excited for, of course!
What does 2018 hold for moviegoers? Between major blockbusters like Avengers: Infinity War and The Incredibles 2, Oscar baits like Lady Bird and Isle of Dogs, to scare fare like The Nun and Halloween, it’s shaping up to be a supermassive year for cinema.
But all in due time, restless souls. For now, here’s a list of films to check out in January 2018:
Set second in the Insidious story chronology, Insidious: The Last Key traces parapsychologist Elise’s early beginnings as she faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet – in her own family home.
This prequel/sequel brings back the modern masters of horror James Wan, Jason Blum and Oren Peli as producers, with up-and-coming director Adam Robitel stepping behind the camera to expand on the franchise’s nightmarish universe.
What do you get when you put Gary Oldman in a fat suit? The answer is a remarkable and mind-boggling transformation that has placed him at the forefront of the Academy Award for “Best Actor” race.
In biographical war drama Darkest Hour, the famed thespian delivers an unrecognisable turn as the late great British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who during World War II, must rally a nation against the Nazi invasion and attempt to change the course of history.
If there’s anything we can learn from the Taken series, as well as Non-Stop, Unknown and Run All Night, it’s that bad guys should really stop messing with Liam Neeson. But I guess they didn’t get the memo.
For the upcoming action thriller The Commuter, the 65-year-old man with a very particular set of skills must play hero once again when he is drawn into a dangerous game where he must uncover a criminal conspiracy on his train before it reaches the last stop.
Based on the best-selling non-fiction book Horse Soldiers, 12 Strong follows a group of CIA paramilitary officers and US Special Forces team as they are sent to help conduct unconventional warfare against Taliban forces in Afghanistan.
Marking renowned photojournalist Nicolai Fuglsig’s directorial debut and presided over by mega action producer Jerry Bruckheimer, this adaptation stars Thor’s Chris Hemsworth and promises to be a very different war movie with strong themes of trust and hope.
It’s a real mouthful of a name, but in this case, the more the better. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the new black comedy by the acclaimed Martin McDonagh, also known as one of the most important contemporary playwrights in the world.
Already pegged as one of the leading contenders for the “Best Picture” and “Best Screenplay” award, the film follows a mother who, when the police in her town fail to find a suspect in her daughter’s murder, purchases three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime.
Bringing the dystopian young-adult franchise full circle, Maze Runner: The Death Cure is the third and final instalment in the Maze Runner saga. Originally set to arrive earlier this year, production was halted when lead actor Dylan O’Brien suffered a near-fatal on-set accident.
In this epic finale, Thomas must lead his group of escaped Gladers on their most dangerous mission yet – breaking into the legendary Last City, a treacherous labyrinth that may turn out to be the deadliest maze of all.
